A wise man once said:
… and whilst I thought it would be somewhat amusing to put down in my race report for the Central Coast Half Marathon that I started running and didn’t stop until I had finished, there was a tiny bit more to it than that!
Basically, what it comes down to is a strong start but an incredibly weak finish.
At the outset and for the first 13 or 14 kilometres I was averaging a time of 5:20/km and feeling pretty good in doing so, but it was at this time when I would have been crossing the line at the City 2 Surf that I hit a big nasty invisible brick wall that some bastard had placed across the bike track we were running, and the last third of the event was spent plodding one foot in front of the other with nothing in the tank.
In the end, I crossed the line at 2:01:42, about five minutes off my personal best for a half marathon.
I managed to catch up with some of the gang from High Tide – the best outdoor fitness on the Central Coast – plus a few other acquaintances after the race, some who were finishing when I was smacking into that brick wall!
A special mention must go out to the only other barefoot runner I saw out there, except this young lass made me and my Vibram Five Fingers look soft – completing the 21km run along a concrete bike track totally barefooted and not just wearing ‘barefoot’ shoes! Very impressive!
